Want to Increase Safety on Natural Ice? ❄️
The Rescue Exercise is the most important training for anyone on the natural ice. It provides hands-on experience in using safety equipment, performing rescues, and self-rescue techniques.
Aim of the Exercise
Learn the practical use and functionality of safety equipment
Gain insight into your own reactions under ice or in emergency situations
Reduce fear of moving on natural ice
The exercise is conducted in controlled conditions and is generally perceived as both useful and enjoyable
Content of the Exercise
Theoretical review of the stages of ice rescue
Entering open water using a safety rope
Practising getting out of the ice with ice claws and a throw line
Practising changing into dry clothes with assistance, and assisting others
Where possible, practise with other rescue equipment
After the exercise, dry clothes can also be changed indoors. In some cases, a sauna may be available (not included in the price).
Who is it for?
Suitable for all outdoor enthusiasts except those for whom icy water is medically restricted
Notify in advance of any illnesses or conditions that may affect participation
An important part of safety training for Nordic skaters and anyone on natural ice
Participation requires completion of the Basic Course Theory or Ice Skills 1
If there are fewer than 5 participants, the exercise may be cancelled. You will be notified separately and the booking fee refunded
Equipment
Weather-appropriate clothing recommended for realistic practice. Skates or ice poles are not required. Bring spare shoes and clothes.
Mandatory (own or rented):
Ice claws and whistle
Backpack with hip belt, crotch strap, and carabiner
Throwing rope
Complete change of clothes in a watertight bag
Towel
Sitting pad
Recommended:
Waterproof gloves (for handling wet clothes)
Plastic bags for wet clothes
Warm drink
Location & Conditions
The exercise is mainly conducted at Helsingin Retkiluistelun premises: Kallvikinniementie 35, 00980 Helsinki. Google Maps
Parking: Culture Centre Sofia P-lot. Walk behind the light brick building, turn left, and proceed along the shore approx. 50 m.
Activities on natural ice are always subject to natural conditions. The starting point or time may occasionally need to be changed. Any changes will be communicated by email.
